“You did it to me.”

Last night I heard a story from my friend Mary Beth, that I’d like to share. Mary Beth said last Wednesday she was volunteering at One Generation Away,

One Generation Away is a local non-profit whose mission is to rid American of hunger through love and service.

Mary Beth was working along side several volunteers to box up food to be distributed when a fellow came to the loading dock door. One of the volunteers asked how they could help and he shared things were not going well and he needed food. Volunteers grabbed a couple of boxes from the wall of prepared non-perishable boxes, added some fresh produce and carried them out to his car where they met his wife and two small children. When the volunteers realized there were kiddos, they added more goodies specifically for the little ones. The family drove away with a trunk full of nourishment and a couple of toys.

A short time later the phone rang in One Generation Away’s office. It was the same gentlemen calling to say that he had found a large bill inside one of the boxes. He wanted to know if it was a mistake. Should he bring it back? The answer was simply, “It’s yours to keep.” Understand, it’s not customary for cash to be included in the food boxes. None of the volunteers that day added money to the boxes. Perhaps it was one of the Rotary members who volunteers to pack the boxes. No one knows. Correct that; Someone knows.

“I was hungry and you fed me…Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me - you did it to me.” From Matthew 25 in The Message.
